What is the risk?

Legionella bacteria, under specific conditions, can proliferate in the built environment and cause Legionnaires disease.

Duties under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 extend to the risks from Legionella bacteria that may arise from the workplace or workplace activities. The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (MHSWR) provide certain requirements and procedures for controlling health and safety at work.

The requirements include the following:

• Identify the sources of risk
• Have suitable control measures to reduce the risks
• Implement and manage a control scheme and appoint a responsible person
• Keep adequate records and check that what has been done is effective.
